Starting a cake business definitely wasn’t that “thing” that I had always wanted to do. For more than a decade, I had dedicated my life to empowering children and their families as a teacher, an advocate, a consultant, researcher, and an administrator in high-poverty urban schools.  In January of 2016, I walked away from my profession. I wasn't willing to compromise my integrity just to maintain my position as Principal at a charter school that failed to do right  by children. I left feeling disheartened, broken, and frustrated.  My hobby, baking and decorating cakes, soon became my therapy.  Sugar was born out of my brokenness  and, not only did God use it to heal me, but He also used it as a means for me to empower myself and to sustain my two little boys and I during the transition. I'm amazed at how far we've come and, for Sugar, it's only the beginning!
